Accounting For over 10 per cent of the India’s GDP and around eight per cent of the employment retailing in India, retail is gradually making its way toward becoming the next boom industry.
The present-day retail sector in India is reflected in sprawling shopping centers, multiplex- malls and huge complexes that offer shopping, entertainment and food - all under one roof. The concept of shopping has altered in terms of format and consumer buying behavior, leading to a revolution in shopping in India. This has also contributed to large scale investments in the real estate sector with major national and global players investing in developing the infrastructure and construction of the retailing business.
The trends that are driving the growth of the retail sector in India may be low share of organized retailing, falling real estate prices, increasing disposable income and consumer aspiration and increasing expenditure for luxury items.
The objective of the MBA in Retail is to increase the managerial capacity of Retail Management professionals by means of developing an understanding of the fundamental principles of management as well as their applications in Indian/international retail context. The fast changing retail environment demands that professionals acquire new skills, improve their efficiency, learn to compete and think out of the box.
Today retailing does not only mean selling to end consumer but it involves an in depth study of a number of parameters like catchment analysis, location planning, logistic and supply chain, visual merchandising which lead to customer satisfaction. Hence it touches various aspects of management vis’-a-‘vis Operations, Finance, Marketing, IT and Human Resource. This requires an education that is intensive, comprehensive and closely linked to the retail business world.
The need is to have a curriculum which has all the inherent features of a business management program and involves pragmatic learning throughout the course. The programme is designed to provide the students a better understanding of retail environment and to make them acquainted with various functions in the retailing business. Students are required to attend workshops related to Communication skills, Retail Mathematics, Data analysis tools, Quantitative Modeling and Operations amongst others.
